“It’s not that bad,” Edward said, combing his fingers through his bangs distractedly. “It’s not really THAT bad, is it?"

There was silence from the peanut gallery, that was never a good sign. Edward tugged at his bangs again, and looked over to Rian, who had somehow managed to perfect a disturbingly familiar poker face in the last twenty minutes. "Rian, help me out here!"

Alphonse ran his hand down his face, lingering over his mouth. "Brother,” he said with a sigh. “Did you do that to yourself? Why would you do that-?"

Edward’s look turned plaintive. "It is. It is that bad. Oh, hell, I have to go into work like this-"

Winry gave up all semblance of composure and folded over herself, howling with laughter. This startled Alphonse slightly, who glanced at her, bewildered, looked to Edward - who had gone to the mirror hanging in the hallway and was trying to twist around enough to see the back of his head - and then passed his glance over to Rian. "What?” he asked, befuddled. “I mean, it’s funny, it looks like Sarah took her scissors to him while he slept on the couch or something…."

Rian raised one eyebrow, the grin barely contained on his face. Alphonse sat back and groaned, and then looked over at Winry, who was still cackling. "Please tell me you didn’t encourage this."

"I told her,” Winry wiped tears from her eyes. “I told her to go play with him, I didn’t realize he had fallen asleep, or that she had found the scissors."

Edward yowled from the hallway like someone had stepped on his tail. "Why is the back of my hair PINK!?"

There was a pause, and then this time Alphonse and Rian both joined Winry in her contagious laughter.

Winry tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, chewing nervously on her bottom lip. Edward sat in the chair next to her, his arms crossed over his chest and his head tilted forward as he dozed. He was exhausted - not in nearly as bad a shape as Alphonse (and his automail was even intact, she should be proud of him), but he was still beaten up, white bandages stark against his tan skin and bright hair.

He had greeted her as he always had, and proceeded to doze off in the chair next to her while they waited. He knew she intended to take them both home to Resembool; that had always been the plan. Their home was in Resembool, with Winry and Granny Pinako - even if the plot of land was overgrown with weeds and wreckage, it was still their home.

Alphonse was going - she knew he was, the absolute relief in HIS eyes when he saw her spoke volumes - Winry cried into his shoulder for almost twenty minutes, simply happy to see him intact for the first time in years. They were going back to Resembool together.

But Edward…?

She wasn’t sure. There was something different in his eyes now, something she had never seen before and wasn’t sure how to deal with. He looked the same, the same weary grin, the mocking flinch when she smacked him, even the way he was sleeping now, feet sprawled out and chin on his chest.

Winry sighed, and looked up at the clock. There was no reason for Edward not to go back with them. True, the military was a mess right now, and the entire city was in upheaval but they had accomplished their goal. Alphonse was restored.

So what was holding Edward back?

It was probably a dream, Ed realized suddenly as he lounged back in the scratchy old kitchen chair. He hadn’t felt this relaxed and calm in weeks, and he was in Roy’s kitchen. It had been almost a year and the decor was exactly the same: in turns both bachelor and terrible.

Roy was there too, his back to Ed, wearing a pair of sleeping trousers and nothing else. Ed grinned as his eyes followed the slope of Roy’s back; the way the pants wore low on his hips told him that Mustang wasn’t wearing anything with the sleep trousers, either.

Empty pizza boxes on the table from last night - Ed leaned forward and flicked up a lid, looking for an elusive leftover slice, despite the fact that he could hear the sizzle and pop of bacon on the burners. Roy was saying something, but what exactly was lost on him.

It was so peaceful, this dream. Absent the blood and the fire and the damnation, even the dreams not classified as nightmares had a razor-sharp edge of ruin and regret. It had been so long that a calming memory resurfaced in such a manner.

Ed glanced around again, and saw Winry was leaning in the doorway. She wasn’t wearing a nightie like he thought, but one of Ed’s shirts, two buttons undone to show a generous portion of her decolletage.

Likely as well this was the only piece of clothing she was wearing, and Ed smirked at the thought of two of his most favorite people to see naked both barely wearing clothes before him.

Like most pleasant things, this dream wasn’t fated to last. Even in the realm of Dream he wasn’t entirely safe from the unpleasantness of reality and at once Ed opened his eyes, awake.

There was something comforting about having a shooting range easily at her disposal. It was cathartic to just put on a set of mufflers, load up a few weapons and empty them into human-shaped targets on the other end of the room. (That may or may not occasionally have pictures taped to the head of a certain blond-haired hunter who was REALLY PISSING HER OFF OKAY.)

Winry put her weapon down and slid the mufflers off. It seemed silly to wear the protective eyewear - not that the Men of Letters apparently had any in stock - but the mufflers at least kept her from deafening herself in the concrete bunker.

As much as she hated to admit, this place was amazing. All it really lacked was a proper garage to hide the cars away in (and that she could tinker in, priorities). She couldn’t really express this to Ed, because then he would point out that she essentially mocked him the entire car ride here and she got enough shit for that as it was. She smiled despite herself, and called the target back.

“Not bad,” Al said from the doorway, and Winry jumped a mile. “Nice cluster there in the body."

She turned and glared at him. "You know, when I say I want some private time, that doesn’t mean follow me everywhere."

"Well, when Ed says it it usually means he’s locked himself in the bathroom.” Al shrugged. “I was just curious how alike you two were."

Winry’s glare soured. "That’s gross, Al."

"Nah, it’s just funny.” He didn’t move. “Hey, did Ed tell you where he was going?"

Winry removed the clip from her weapon, thought about loading another one and decided against it. "He didn’t say anything, why?"

"Oh, perfect,” Al groaned. “The Impala’s gone.”

The control room was ancient, still full of cobwebs and filth, abandoned coffee mugs and left-behind notepads. You had to pass through the control room to get to everywhere else, and Winry could tell by the tracks in the inches of dust that, aside from one or two cursory glances, the boys had all but ignored the room.

Which was to be expected, in these days of wireless internet the huge ancient machines were more or less useless. It did not mean that the ancient radios and older tech needed to moulder in obscurity.

“I wasn’t brought here to play maid,” Winry muttered to herself, but her curiosity had been awakened. If there was one thing she particularly liked to do, it was take things apart - and tech like this? She’d never had occasion to even LOOK at before.

Besides, the room WAS filthy, and they were tracking dirt and crap into the much more habitable parts of the batcave. (Leave it to Ed to name this place.) It couldn’t hurt to do a LITTLE cleaning - she could reward herself by taking apart what looked like to be a proto-computer that took up most of the far wall.

And that was how Ed found her, hours later, standing on a table with parts scattered all around her and a cloud of dust and dirt in the air. “What the hell are you doing?” he asked, startling her enough that she knocked a few bolts and bits down off the table.

Winry wiped her hand across her face. “Uh,” she said. “Cleaning?"

"Cleaning, right,” Ed said. He didn’t look surprised nor impressed, in fact he looked like he had just woken up. “Maybe you should get cleaned up, we’re going soon."

"Going? Going where?"

"Just get cleaned up, okay?”

“Have you heard from Roy?” Al asked, chasing a sausage link around his plate with a fork, while Winry cleaned up after Ed’s explosion of breakfast genius. They could hear the showers running anywhere in the batcave, the pipes were ancient and creaky and they had some time to discuss before Ed was out of there.

Winry hesitated, and then dumped more dishes in the sink. “No,” she said, and put her hands on the edge of the old fixture. “He and I were never as close as Ed was."

"That’s an understatement,” Al said, finally spearing the link. “It’s just - Ed gets really evasive whenever I bring him up, and the time we tried to see him, Roy was really bad off."

"It’s probably better for him that we’re out of his life,” Winry said.

“No doubt.” Al chewed thoughtfully. “But, Ed."

Without even having to explain, his words spoke volumes. Winry turned the water on, and Al wondered if that would mess with the water pressure in the showers. "That idiot is in love with Mustang,” Winry said, and there was hurt in her voice. “He loved Mustang far more than he ever loved me."

"He still loves you,” Al murmured.

“I don’t like being settled for,” Winry said. “It was simpler when it was the three of us - strange, I know, but then I didn’t feel like the consolation prize.” She lapsed into silence, the plates and flatware clinking together as she ran the water over them.

Al stared down at his plate - the exhaustion pulled at his eyes and thrummed, deep in his veins but he could ignore it. “I need to talk to Roy,” Al said finally. “If he’s done with us, that’s fine, but I need to hear it from him."

“You are so full of shit,” Winry said, as Ed rolled the car into park. “We are in the middle of nowhere. Are you two squatting in an abandoned hovel again, because I am not peeing in a bucket-"

"Jeez, Winry, relax,” Ed said. “Would I lie to you?"

"In a heartbeat."

Ed rolled his eyes and sighed. "Okay, maybe that was the wrong thing to ask, but I’m not lying to you, I swear.” He opened the door and swung his legs out, stretching as he exited the vehicle. Winry watched him suspiciously as he popped the trunk and pulled out his duffel, slinging the strap over his head. “You coming, or what?"

Truth was, Ed did not like leaving Al alone in the lair. Al had been acting stranger and stranger, and with Rian AWOL and most of their allies out of contact, he had had to reach out to someone to help keep an eye on things.

There were very few people the Elrics would trust with a secret of this magnitude - and Winry was right at the top of that list.

There were clumps of dead leaves still pushed against the insides of the stairs that led down to the heavy old iron door. Winry stood at the top of the stairs, arms crossed over her chest because despite the warm spring day, it was chilly in the shade. "You’re joking,” she said, as Ed unlocked the door.

He held the door open and bowed. “After you, princess."

"You’re not joking, you’re just fucked in the head,” Winry said, and walked through the door. “Is Al really in here?"

"Probably sleeping on his laptop in the library,” Ed said, pulling the heavy door shut behind them both and locking it. “AL! We’re home, wake up!”

Al sat with his chin on the table, a scowl settled deep on his features. If he had had the wherewithal to hunt down wherever it was Ed had decided to stash his laptop he WOULD - he just did not want to prove Ed right by standing up and then having a dizzy spell.

He jumped a mile when Winry settled her hand on his forehead. “You are burning UP,” she said, and covered him with a blanket. “Does Ed know you have a fever?"

"I don’t have a fever,” Al muttered. “I feel fine."

"You’re a worse liar than your brother is,” Winry took a step back, and looked down the long table. So many of the chairs were still dusty, unused by either brother. “Why are you so sick? What isn’t Ed telling me about?"

Al closed his eyes, grateful that Ed didn’t spill the beans on everything that was currently going on. "Nothing, I’m just - maybe I caught some sort of ancient crud from the books.” Hell, this lie even sounded flimsy to HIM. Mei would have beat him half to death with his own laptop by now. He sighed deeply and tried not to think about how long it had been since he had heard her voice.

“Right.” Winry was even less impressed. “Ancient crud from the books. Whatever, you boys can keep your world-ending secrets, I’m just here to make sure that you don’t cough up blood and die choking on phlegm while Ed is gallivanting around doing… whatever the fuck it is HE is doing.” She shook her head. “Someone needs to remind me why I took this job when both of you have this stupid, strong silent suffering MAN thing going on. It’s not cute when either of you do it.”

Winry Rockbell had not quite given up hunting, not quite retired from it but she was taking a hiatus. It seemed much wiser to be further away from the Elrics, as everything that they got into seemed intent on killing everyone around them. There was a low-level guilt that buzzed in her mind over this - didn’t Ed need her, need her stability? But she had to look after herself first.

So she worked in the roadhouse; teased the hunters that came in, transmitted leads to them to track down, and occasionally tinkered on the handful of old cars they kept behind the shop. It kept her busy, and it kept her from thinking too hard on everything that was going on in the world.

That is, until the day that Ed walked through her door again.

It wasn’t the first time that she had seen him since he vanished, but it was the first time that he had dared to come alone. His hair was scruffy - longer than she remembered him keeping it, tied back in a small spiky ponytail at the base of his skull. He looked exhausted, and not in a way that simply sleep could cure.

Winry glanced around the bar - it was early afternoon, the place was empty. She sighed and put one hand on the smooth surface of the bar. “What are you doing here, Ed?"

He stood in the doorway, sunlight sneaking in behind him, collar of his light jacket turned up against his neck. "I don’t know,” he finally admitted, and his voice had that gravel edge it acquired when he hadn’t slept much. Winry felt a little trill in her gut at the memory. “I felt, I just had to come.” He sighed. “I’m sick of the way everyone’s been torn apart.”

Winry heard the clatter from her workshop and sighed, pulling her welding goggles up and settling them over the bandanna that kept her hair back. She waited a moment, listening for the sound of further destruction, and was rewarded with a pained groan emanating from somewhere outside the door.

Winry opened the door, it was a huge, heavy old thing with no window - and surveyed her victim. Nicholas Elric lay prone on the ground, a tray upside down just out of reach, a bowl on his head, and broken dishes scattered around him. “I thought I told you to stay in bed,” Winry said, one hand on the door’s frame.

Nick pushed the bowl back and glared up at her. “I thought I’d be safe from tripping over fake legs walking down a single hallway,” he retorted, and Winry scowled at him.

“Call my automail fake again, just one more time,” she threatened. “You need to get back to bed, you should be resting still."

"All I’ve done is rest.” Nick pushed himself into a kneeling position, and then lifted the bowl off of his head. The shirt he was wearing was one of Jack’s, and it was too big. The collar sagged down toward his empty shoulder, showing the fresh bandages that had been wrapped only this morning. “I can’t sit still any longer, if I sit still all I can think about is the pain."

Winry crouched down beside Nick, righting the tray and picking up pieces of shattered dishware. "It’s not just to keep you still,” she said. “If you overtax your body you could get really sick.” She placed the back of her hand on his forehead and Nick tried to jerk his head away. “You’re already warm, Nick. You can’t risk yourself like this.”

“Well,” Winry Rockbell said as she looked up. “Isn’t THIS a surprise.” She wiped her hands on a rag and straightened, eyeing her visitor warily.

General Mustang, oddly, did not look all that different from the last time she saw him, well over a decade prior. Of course she had seen him in the newspapers and heard him on the radio, grandiose speeches and politics - and listened while the other automail techs who worked in the valley and hung out at the same bars on their downtime debated his policies drunkenly.

He had never bothered to contact her again once Edward and Alphonse disappeared off into the sunset, and she was okay with this. Winry crossed her arms and stared at him. “To what do I owe the pleasure, General?"

"I am glad to see that you have not forgotten me, Miss Rockbell,” Mustang said, and Winry held up her left hand.

“Missus, thank you,” she said airily.

“Congratulations are in order then, I see,” Mustang murmured, rumbling in that tone of his that always used to set Edward off like dynamite. Winry pulled her other glove off and ignored the comment.

“Only about nine years tardy, but I suppose I’ll take what I can get,” she responded. “What can I do for you, General? It doesn’t appear that you’re in need of my services."

"Me, personally? No.” Mustang held himself stiff, formally. “I just thought I would prepare you, because I do have someone with me that needs your expertise."

Winry cocked an eyebrow in confusion, and Mustang stepped aside, revealing the strikingly familiar blond who was leaning, exhausted, against the door frame behind him. Winry stared at him and then sighed, running her hand up into her hair in resignation. "You have got to be KIDDING me.”

Winry sighed mournfully as she fished the old book from the river. It was just her luck that she had been headed out when she saw the faint glow emanating from beneath the bridge. Carefully, she used the tree branch to drop the old, hardbound book to the ground beside her, where it landed with a wet plop.

The book was hardbound, and even waterlogged the cover still held its shape. The murky river water had worn away most of the gilding though, all that was left was a faintly ominous brown. The book looked fairly plain, for what it was - if she couldn’t see the faint pulsing red glow, she would have foolishly touched it with her bare hands. The red aura it gave out to those who could see it was a huge warning flag that this book had been touched by dark magic.

It wasn’t any of her business. She could have ignored the book and moved on, she was supposed to be meeting Edward the club in an hour - but what the hell kind of good witch was she supposed to be if she let a dark magic artifact just go floating off down the river?

The only gloves she had on her were her nice leather gloves, and she muttered under her breath sullenly. Once she touched the book the gloves would be sullied. Not to the point that the dark magic they would absorb would be dangerous to any non-magic user, but she would have to dispose of them all the same. Well, if she was going to fuck up her gloves, she might as well at least take a look at the book that was causing all her trouble first.

Crouched on the riverbank, Winry Rockbell carefully opened the dangerous book.

Winry looked Edward up and down. “I’m sure that there’s a good reason why you’re naked, and I’m really sure that I don’t want to hear what it is.”

Edward had been stopped mid-yawn as he walked through into the kitchen. He stared at Winry, confused. “What the hell are you doing here?”

She cocked her head, staring at him. “Ed, put on pants or something, please.”

"Roy doesn’t care that I’m naked," Edward said defensively, scratching a hand through his hair. He half turned and yelled back in the direction of the bedroom. "Mustang! Did you give the witch a key?" He looked back at Winry and frowned. "How did you get IN here, we have wards."

"I let her in," Rian said, shoving at Edward with a hand as he squeezed through into the kitchen. Rian hesitated, and looked at Edward. "You’re naked, Ed."

"NO SHIT," Edward yelled.

"What on earth is going on in here," Roy said muzzily, rubbing sleep out of his eyes. He rested his hand on Edward’s shoulder and peered at Winry. "Miss Rockbell, you’ve invaded our kitchen. Again."

She pointed at Edward. “Tell your wolf boy-toy to put on some pants or pull on some fur, because he’s dangling in the breeze and it’s really distracting.”

"Ed," Roy said gently, and Edward heaved a very large and disgruntled sigh.

"Not even in my own home," Edward muttered, as he shifted. Within seconds a large golden wolf sat forlornly on the floor, his ears back and expression guarded.

"Better?" Roy asked. Winry nodded her head, clearly satisfied. "All right, that still begs the question why we’ve been invaded when there were clearly wards put up to keep everyone else out." Roy glanced at Rian, who did not look the slightest bit repentant. Rian shrugged.

Winry Rockbell did not lift her head as the bell jingled above the door. “No vampires in the store,” she said, flipping a page of the grimoire she was studying. This did not dissuade her visitor, who folded his arms over the top of the glass cabinet and stared at Winry. She rolled her eyes and lifted her head, taking her glasses off. “Yes, that means you too, Rian.”

Rian Martin puffed air through his cheeks, looking more than slightly ridiculous. “You like me, though.”

"I have a sign," Winry pointed at the door. She closed her grimoire though, and shook her head. "What are you doing here?"

"Looking for Ed," Rian ran a hand through his hair. "Roy would’ve been by, but he’s scared of you."

"As well he should be," Winry muttered. "I haven’t seen Ed though, not in a week or two. He only turns up when he wants something." She eyed Rian, and he grinned sheepishly. "A trait that he has apparently passed on."

"Hey, I’d turn up more if you didn’t have a racist sign in your window."

Winry’s eyes darkened menacingly. “Don’t talk to me of racism, fangboy. Come back when your entire family has been systematically hunted down and burned at the stake simply because of accusations by, oh, a VAMPIRE.” She slid off her stool and stalked off toward the back, blond ponytail flipping sharply with the movement. She stopped and turned, pointing a finger at Rian. “And if you say ‘all vampires aren’t like that!’ I’m going to cast a silencing spell on you that will last a MONTH.”

Rian pouted. “I thought you liked me!”

"I do, that’s the only reason you haven’t been thrown out on your ass." Winry tossed a bundle on the counter. "Here. This will help."

"I can’t," Winry said, her voice exhausted. She had been sitting up late, a clean white cloth spread over the kitchen table and the innards of a client’s automail laid out before her. "I can’t do this any more, Al. I just can’t."

Alphonse had been sitting up with her - automail was a bit beyond his ken, but it was a little too warm in the upstairs at the moment, and besides, if he set foot in the same room that Edward was in right now, no one would leave happy.

He looked at the ceiling as Winry covered her face with both hands. She wasn’t crying this time, just exhausted, and Alphonse could relate. It was weary work, trying to heal someone who did not want to be saved, and Alphonse for the life of him could not figure out what was going on in his brother’s brain right now.

Edward, who had not spoken a word in the two weeks since he had been home. He had not hardly eaten a bite, he barely moved, sitting up in his bed and staring silently out the window, looking for something no one else could see.

Alphonse understood he had been hurt. Everyone had been hurt in the conflict, it was hard to lose someone you were so close to - but this living death that Edward seemed to exist in was almost worse. And nothing seemed like it would snap him out of it, not even when Alphonse had punched him.

Winry ran her hands up to her bandanna, leaving small flecks of oil on her cheeks and forehead. She sighed deeply, and looked at Alphonse, eyes red-rimmed. “We have got to do something,” she said firmly. “He’s family.”

"I know," Alphonse said. "I just don’t know what."
