Gotou was in that fuzzy stage between asleep and awake when Masayoshi returned, walking quietly, and half-climbed on the bed to tug on his arm. “You have to see this,” Masayoshi said, finger to his lips, as Gotou sat up and yawned.
“I thought you were waking up the baby,” Gotou said, and Masayoshi tugged his arm again.
“Quietly,” he hissed.
Gotou allowed himself to be prodded out of bed – his warm, comfortable bed – and followed Masayoshi across the hall, to the room that the two children currently shared. He wasn’t entirely sure the point of this, but he wasn’t awake enough to argue.
Keiko had had her “grown-up bed” for a few weeks now, having graduated from the crib into a proper toddler bed. She was sleeping on her back sprawled out – but Masanori was in the bed with her, curled up against her, back to her side and fist curled against his mouth.
Gotou looked to the crib, brow furrowed, and back. “He got out,” he said.
“I know,” Masayoshi breathed. “Aren’t they precious?”
“I mean I’m not that surprised, I figured he would be climbing out sooner,” Gotou said, and Masayoshi pinched his arm, causing him to yelp, and shoved him back out of the room.
“It’s cute that he decided the best place to sleep is with his sister,” Gotou said defensively as Masayoshi shut the door behind them. “But imagine if he’d decided to crawl into bed with us, he could have gotten squashed. We should put a lock on their door-”
Masayoshi cocked his head and stared at Gotou. “Gotou-san,” he said, and Gotou winced, because Masayoshi didn’t call him that, not anymore. “Our children are adorable.”
“I don’t recall saying anything to the contrary.”
“Good.” Masayoshi said, and patted Gotou’s arm. “Get the camera.”
