Masayoshi isn’t scared of anything as insignificant as a jump scare, because he’s Masayoshi, and he actually laughed, idiot that he is. Gotou huffed and crossed his arms and glared as Masayoshi audibly digested this new and interesting piece of information. “Gotou-san is scared,” he said, delighted, “of haunted houses.”

“I am not scared of haunted houses,” Gotou snapped, although he is quite wary of the wicked gleam that has emerged in Masayoshi’s eyes. This is new. He’s not sure that he likes this, that much.

“You jumped,” Masayoshi said.

He had, there was no use lying about that. It was hard not to, when a door banged open immediately to his right and an animatronic torso had jerked forward abruptly. He had jumped, yes, but he’d also angled his own body to block Masayoshi from the immediate danger.

This had been a stupid idea, he decided, arms still crossed sourly. The strobing lights and loud shrieks of the amusement park’s attraction weren’t doing anything to help calm his heartbeat, and Masayoshi now had a new piece of information to pick over and worry at like a puppy with a well-chewed toy. Masayoshi worked his arm through Gotou’s, although Gotou’s arms were still crossed, and tugged him forward. “We’re not even halfway through yet,” he said. “Unless you’re too scared, Gotou-san.”

“I am not,” Gotou said, each word its own sentence. “Scared.”

“You’re scared of the Ferris wheel,” Masayoshi said speculatively. “AND the haunted house.” He looked over at Gotou and kept grinning. “No wonder you didn’t want to come to the amusement park.”

He could have warned Masayoshi that there was someone lurking in the shadow at the curve of the hallway, but he was bitter and spiteful at the moment, and it was intensely gratifying when the actor startled Masayoshi so much that he nearly teleported behind Gotou without so much as a sound. “Are you using me as a shield?” Gotou asked, trying for innocent and mostly getting there.

“NO.”

Okay, so maybe this hadn’t been the worst idea for a date night in the world.
