Summary: He'd only been gone about an hour.
He’d only been gone about an hour - a trip to the store to pick up some snacks, more diapers, and a chance to smoke a few cigarettes without Masayoshi’s clucking disapproval - but when Gotou unlocked the door and was greeted with uncharacteristic silence he hesitated a moment before entering.
It was about naptime, he knew better than to call out a greeting, but usually he would see Masayoshi sitting up at the table from the entryway, and there was no one there. He heeled off his shoes and stepped out of the genkan, left his bags on the counter in the kitchenette and cautiously stuck his head through the door that separated the kitchen area from the main room of the apartment.
Gotou smiled reflexively. Among the mess of half-packed boxes, Masayoshi lay on his back on the baby blanket, Masanori curled on his chest and Keiko pillowed on his arm. All three were dead-to-the-world asleep, Masayoshi snoring slightly to prove it.
He fished out his cell phone - this would be all the photographic evidence he needed that yes, Masayoshi, you do drool on me occasionally, despite your complete state of denial. The shutter noise on his cell phone was louder than he thought, and Keiko stirred, rolling onto her back, belly exposed. She yawned huge and blinked her dark eyes open, inhaling deeply to cry but Gotou carefully scooped her off the blanket, taking extra care not to disturb Masayoshi.
Thwarted mid-noise, Keiko flailed her arms sleepily against Gotou’s chest, then tucked her head down against his shirt and let out a great, sleepy sigh. “Sorry little girl,” he murmured softly, stepping over Masayoshi and sitting down on the bed, rocking her gently. “Didn’t mean to wake you. Shh, go back to sleep.”
