Summary: This isn't funny anymore, Masayoshi.

It was almost dusk, and Masayoshi hadn’t returned yet.

Gotou sat cross-legged at the low table and stared at his cell phone. He’d texted Masayoshi earlier, he had some meetings with his superiors he had to attend, and strangely, Masayoshi hadn’t responded to him. It hadn’t been strange at the time, sometimes Masayoshi couldn’t get to his phone for a while … but he always responded eventually.

He’d left in the early afternoon to go visit the juvenile detention center, bubbly and cheerful as always. He’d had his phone in hand, Gotou knew he had it with him, why hadn’t he responded?

Where WAS he?

Gotou’s fingers itched.

He’d sent more messages.

Where are you?

Respond to me, idiot.

You should let me know if you’re going to be this late.

Masayoshi, this isn’t funny any more.

He’s lost his phone. Gotou drummed his fingers on the table and stared at his blank, silent cell phone. That was it. He’d lost his cell phone. It was a distinctly Masayoshi thing to do, maybe he’d trustingly lent it to someone and they had run off with it, maybe any second from now he’d walk through the door sheepishly and this knot of worry in his chest would dissolve into nothing….

His phone lit up a split-second before it rang, he had it in his hand before the caller ID even registered. “Masayoshi, you dumbfuck-“

“Ah, Gotou-san?” It wasn’t Masayoshi. Gotou looked at his phone - he didn’t recognize the number.

“Who is this?”

Please be all right.

“This is Ishihara.”

Please.

She sounded stressed and exhausted. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t have your number…” he listened to her trail off, that ball of worry solidifying into something dark and cold. “You should come to the hospital,” she said quietly. “There’s been an accident.”
