Summary: Kanata sat on the floor before the fireplace, legs crossed and elbows braced on his knees.

Kanata sat on the floor before the fireplace, legs crossed and elbows braced on his knees. It was snowing steadily outside the cabin, as it had been for most of the day. He had declined the invitation to join Masayoshi and Gotou at the nice dinner at the main lodge, and instead sat inside on Gotou’s laptop and clicked around on the crappy free internet that the place provided. The pair of them had been more … couple-y, lately, and he felt like a third wheel.

He sighed wearily, chin in his hands, and watched the flickering flames. Gotou didn’t look at him the same way he looked at Masayoshi, he knew that. He had known that from day one, the first time he’d kissed Gotou, a little too drunk and Gotou kissed him back desperately that the only reason he got away with it was because he was physically identical to Gotou’s Masayoshi. Gotou hadn’t worked up the nerve to say anything to Masayoshi, he was probably never going to if Kanata had not nudged him in the right direction.

The cabin was not very large - granted, it was larger than Gotou’s apartment, but it was just one main room, a kitchen, a bathroom and the loft upstairs where a bed bigger than he had ever seen for all three of them. This whole trip had been Masayoshi’s idea, just the three of them - he had hesitated when he said three, and Kanata pretended like he didn’t see the glance - he pretended he didn’t see a lot of things right now. He had no obligation to keep the peace, to play along, to keep at this game of pretend that this weird three-way relationship was working and that it was a good idea. Why did he keep at it? Kanata dragged both of his hands through his hair and groaned, and then flopped dramatically over onto his side on the plush carpet.

There really was no point to any of this. He sighed and closed his eyes, felt the warmth on his cheeks from the fire and thought idly about disappearing. It would take a lot of work, but - he could do it, even without digging into Masayoshi’s bank account. He had no idea what he would do with himself, but - it wasn’t like he had any idea what he was doing with himself now. Without some greater cause or ideal to work for, what was he? Useless, broken, unwanted….

The door to the cabin banged open suddenly, and he rolled over onto his back, staring at the ceiling as the fire danced with the gust of frigid air that washed through the cabin. He sat up in time to see Gotou heave Masayoshi through the door, jacket covered almost completely in snow. Gotou came in right behind Masayoshi, and unlike Masayoshi he was mostly clean and dry. “I fell!” Masayoshi announced when he saw Kanata sit up. He shucked off coat, scarf, hat and boots all in record time.

“You fell?” Kanata repeated, and Masayoshi bounded around the couch and nearly flopped completely on him. Kanata wasn’t prepared for the full-body physical affection, but somehow still managed to catch most of his weight as Masayoshi slid down into a seated position.

“Oi, I’m not your servant you know,” Gotou said as he hung up Masayoshi’s discarded coat and scarf.

“Why didn’t you come to dinner?” Masayoshi nuzzled up against Kanata, pressing his face into Kanata’s neck and sighing contentedly. “We missed you, there were a lot of people.”

Kanata looked over Masayoshi’s head at Gotou. “You let him drink again,” he accused, and Gotou, amused, came around the couch himself.

“Nope,” he said, and ran his hand through Kanata’s hair affectionately before Kanata could jerk back at the unexpected contact. “He’s not had a drop.”

“Gotou-san shoved me in a snowbank,” Masayoshi said, slightly muffled. “He’s mean.”

“I didn’t shove you anywhere, you dove headfirst into the snow like a three-year-old.” Gotou dropped into a seated position on Kanata’s other side, and Kanata looked over at him in surprise when Gotou leaned against him as well, sighing contentedly. “Warm,” he murmured. “Thanks for keeping the fire going, it really makes this place toasty.”

“Yeah,” Kanata said, and stared into the fire. With Gotou leaning against his side, and Masayoshi folded halfway around his other, he was completely sandwiched between the pair of them. He closed his eyes and sighed deeply. “So annoying,” he muttered, and Masayoshi pinched him.

“Don’t be rude,” Masayoshi said, and Kanata elbowed him. They glared at each other, eyes locked for a long moment before Kanata leaned into Masayoshi and went for a ticklish spot. Masayoshi yelped and toppled over, and then they all went like dominoes, Gotou grunting in surprise as he landed against Kanata’s back. Masayoshi laughed from underneath Kanata’s weight, and Kanata, face against Masayoshi’s chest, laughed helplessly as well.

“Idiots,” Gotou said, but he didn’t move either.
