Title: #10 - Family
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
AU: Sceptre of Flamel
Characters/Pairing: Roy/Ed
Rating: T
Length: 864
Summary: It’s hard to go back.
It had taken some time to restore the cabin, without alchemy. Years of neglect had caused the roof to collapse in on itself; the window shattered under the stress of bearing a load it wasn’t made for, and nearly everything inside was destroyed. They had to rebuild by hand, but it was a price well paid.
Edward snuggled under the enormous heavy quilt that covered the bed. Roy was lying on his back, head pillowed with one arm and eyes on the large window, where occasionally white could be seen from outside as snow blew across the glass. They did not have a radio, or much by way of books, anymore, but that was all right because most nights they made their own entertainment.
Not tonight, though. Edward was exhausted, he could feel the strength sapped from his very bones. They had worked hard to prepare for this winter, a full larder of food; pickled vegetables and salted meat - while conceivably they both could go all winter without eating, it was not something either wanted to do. Even immortal angels get cranky when they are hungry.
Edward stretched both of his hands above his head. He had been out in the sun so much that the hands were matched in tone finally. It had taken a long time to get used to the automail, now it was taking longer still to adjust back to flesh. Roy noticed what he was doing and put an arm around Edward, drawing him closer under the blankets.
"Still haven’t told Winry," Edward said, wiggling the fingers of his right hand and then his left in turn. "She’ll cut it off again."
"It’s been years," Roy reminded him. "Perhaps you ought to post a letter?"
Edward made a face, nose wrinkled up. Time had a way of flowing funny when you were immortal - and it had been years. Several winters now, although this was the first since they had found each other again, and completed the repairs on the cabin. “She’ll hunt me down,” he said.
"Your brother is the only one who knows the exact location of this cabin," Roy reminded him. "Besides, it HAS been years. They missed you terribly the last time I saw them, and you had been missing for quite a while by then." He kissed the top of Edward’s head, as if making certain that he was real, and was, in fact, here.
It had been long months apart. Edward grievously injured, held in the healing halls of the aetheric realm. Roy was not permitted there, spawn of an angel-turned-demon, so he had to wait in lonely vigil for any notice. After almost nine months and no word, no sign of angels or Edward, he had left to go find the answers himself.
But now he had Edward back, and in his bed, and now there were no more cold all-metal limbs to contend with, just a squirmy, warm, naked Edward who was unusually ticklish.
"We should go," Roy said, face still resting on Edward’s head. "See your brother, and Winry, and the kids. It’s been so long, I’m sure they’ll be glad to see you."
Edward sighed deeply. It was a constant source of conflict for him - and Roy knew how painful it could be. When everything first changed and Roy had been cut off from all the people in his life - they thought him a murderer, an alchemist too far gone to bring back - it was devastating. Roy had no choice in severing those ties, and while he had made an effort in the ensuing years to contact certain people to try to explain what had occurred, there was no going back for him. Edward, on the other hand, still had family who loved and supported him ….
…who were growing older by the day, while Edward and Roy stayed young together.
It was an inevitability that at some point they would drop off the map. It would become too hard to explain if they were seen. People would jump to the most obvious conclusion - witchcraft, or, more reasonably, that they as alchemists had discovered the secret to immortality. They would be pursued again, hunted across the landscape and the places where they could hide were shrinking all the time.
Soon they would join their brethren in the aetheric realm. The days of lazing around in the mortal sphere were drawing to a close.
"We should go," Roy said again. "For Yule."
Edward turned his entire body in toward Roy, curled so that Roy could not see his face, and sighed. “You’re right,” he said. “We should.”
"They’re your family," Roy said, fingers stroking down the curve of Edward’s naked back. "They’ll understand."
He looked up, and said, “they’re your family too, you know.”
Roy smiled and kissed him. “I know,” he said softly. “I know.”
