Somehow, whenever Masayoshi said ‘just one more episode, Gotou-san, please?’ they managed to lose more than half the night. Gotou wasn’t too put out by this; he was warm and content, sitting on the floor with his back to his bed, sprawled out with a blanket half over his lap and several empty cans of beer on the table in front of him. Masayoshi sat on his knees at the table properly, attention entirely on the television, enthralled as if he hadn’t seen this episode so many times he could recite the dialogue by heart.

It had become a tradition at this point that they’d never managed to catch the count-down … or the fireworks. One of them, usually Gotou, would glance at his phone and realize that the day and the year had turned over quietly while Red Axe defeated evil once more. He’d wait until the episode was over to remind Masayoshi, and Masayoshi would be upset for a moment that they missed it again this year, Gotou-san, why didn’t you say anything!? Gotou would tease him, and Masayoshi would pout, and Gotou would put on another episode to appease him and that would be that.

Gotou glanced at his phone, resting on his leg. It had lit up with a notification, highlighting the time briefly before it automatically darkened. He could make mention to Masayoshi it was five 'till, but that would interrupt the episode at a pivotal fight scene.

He smiled and leaned forward, intending to reach for the beer he’d left unfinished on the table, but somehow instead his hand found Masayoshi’s arm, fingers catching on the sleeve of his hooded sweatshirt.

Masayoshi looked at him instantly. Gotou froze, and then withdrew his hand, looking away and trying desperately not to flush any more than he had already. When he glanced back over, Masayoshi was still staring at him quizzically, head cocked, curious.

“Gotou-san?”

“It’s nothing,” Gotou said, and this time did collect his beer, settling back against the bed and looking toward the television. “You’ll miss the end of the episode.”

Masayoshi shifted on his knees, and Gotou looked over to him, met his eye again. He looked nervous, which was unusual for Masayoshi. “…what?” Gotou asked, dreading the answer.

“Can I sit beside you?” Masayoshi asked quietly, and Gotou hesitated again, surprised … then sighed, scooting a bit over and raising his arm. Masayoshi moved quickly, settling in beside him. “Don’t hog the blanket,” Gotou said, and Masayoshi huffed indignantly.

You’re the one who steals all the blankets,” he said as Gotou put his arm over Masayoshi’s shoulder. Masayoshi settled against him, warm in the best way, and Gotou smiled. He turned his head to look at Masayoshi plastered against him, but to his surprise Masayoshi had turned his face up toward Gotou’s and was not looking at the television at all.

“Oh,” Gotou said, as Masayoshi hesitated, and then kissed him softly.

“Happy New Year, Gotou-san,” Masayoshi said, as the clock turned over.
