Summary:

They may well have existed in two different worlds. Masayoshi stood across the street from the koban - he was far enough away to not be noticed easily, and besides there were plenty of pedestrians to mask his presence. It wasn’t Totsuka standing outside the station, it was an officer that he didn’t recognize, but it wasn’t his place to get closer. He was just observing.

Gotou walked with a limp now. He didn’t need the crutch anymore, but he moved slower than Masayoshi was used to. He had been in the hospital for weeks, recovering - after that first day when he opened his eyes and stared through Masayoshi like he wasn’t even there, it had made Masayoshi’s heart stop beating, for Gotou to not even recognize him - he’d run away, he couldn’t even bear the thought of it.

“Gotou-san,” Masayoshi murmured to himself softly, thinking about approaching him again. What would he say, exactly - hey, I know your brain’s a bit scrambled from your accident so you don’t remember this at all, but hi, I’m your live-in boyfriend? We saved the world together a couple of times, maybe you remember that?

No, that wasn’t fair to spring on him. He had to let Gotou heal at his own pace. So he kept his distance - he watched over Gotou to make sure there wasn’t any problems, that Gotou wasn’t in any danger, and in time he would find a way to bump into him and smile and say ‘hey.’ Maybe they could start over, maybe Gotou would recall, in time….

Maybe eventually he’d work up the courage to even try to talk to him again … but he couldn’t stand to be looked at like that, to be looked through like he meant nothing at all. He didn’t have the strength to handle that again. He trailed behind Gotou in the warm sunny afternoon, almost two blocks behind, and thought idly about how he hadn’t heard from Ishihara in a while, and how he was gonna get the scolding of a lifetime once she got ahold of him. Masayoshi’s idle thoughts would get him in trouble eventually he knew, and he almost lost Gotou again because he wasn’t paying enough attention.

He lingered at the edge of the row. Cemeteries never bothered him before, but being in this one reminded him that it had been a long time since he’d visited his grandfather’s grave marker. Once he saw Gotou safely home he would have to do that, and apologize that he had been away so long.

The grave marker that Gotou stopped at was unfamiliar, and looked fairly recent. Masayoshi scratched his nose, tried to think - Gotou’s family wasn’t from here, they were from much farther away, so who…?

Oh.

He drifted closer, and remembered the smoke filling his lungs as he shoved Gotou through the door, the little girl clasped tightly in Gotou’s arms, the ceiling falling from above….

Gotou was sitting on the ground, his face in his hands. Masayoshi put his arms over Gotou’s shoulders, and he could feel them shaking. “Masayoshi,” he was saying, quietly - “You idiot, you fucking idiot-”

He hadn’t been forgotten at all.
