Fullmetal Alchemist (Three Alchemists) - Nightmare [EdKit]

Title: Nightmare
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist
AU: Three Alchemists
Characters/Pairing: Ed/Kit
Rating: T
Length: 643
Summary:

They could have done several things with the single large bed in the room, up to and including transmuting it into two separate beds. But they were both exhausted, it was too cold for one of them to sleep on the floor and Edward and Catie looked at each other and came to a silent agreement. They would share the bed.

Years of sleeping alone made it weird to have another body in the bed. Catie slept restlessly, feeling almost as if she was perched on the edge of the bed, her back to the demilitarized zone of pillows that divided his side from hers. It was a silly provision to make, they were both adults (mostly), and there was nothing funny going on, but it somehow made her feel better about the whole thing. They were lucky to have a bed to share at all, it was the last room in the small inn.

It was Mustang’s fault - but then again, when wasn’t it? Catie had been content to further her research in the libraries and stay out of the whole human weapon business - but that was a difficult thing to make happen, especially when ones' specialty could be very effectively turned into a weapon for the military’s disposal. Maybe that was why Mustang was so intent on getting them both out of Central, sending them on a “mission” together to keep them both out of his hair while the military brass did whatever the hell it was they did while the toured the main base. Whatever the reason, he had to know that they two young alchemists disliked each other immensely.

She slept shallowly, waking several times in the night. Catie rubbed the sleep from her eye drowsily, and after a huge yawn - realized that it wasn’t her imagination, she was hearing something. She lifted her head from the pillow, and looked over at the blanket-covered lump huddled on the far side of the mattress.

Edward was … whimpering?

Catie hadn’t known the other alchemist long - she knew he was arrogant, and a bit of a dick, and needed a good punch in the gut now and again - plus he hung out with a walking talking suit of armor that was apparently his littler brother (there was an interesting explanation behind THAT, and she was going to get it eventually) - but she had never heard a sound like this come from him before. She raised herself up on an elbow, and disregarding the demilitarized zone, cautiously poked the lump in the back with one finger.

The noise … didn’t quite cease. It did decrease in volume though, to almost a choked-off noise. “Ed?” Catie asked, and poked him again.

To her surprise, he rolled over, huddling in close to the pillows that marked off the space between them. Catie withdrew her hand slowly, as now his whimper could be clearly heard as words.

He kept saying “sorry.”

Catie swallowed hard, looking at the expression twisted on his face and feeling her heart sink. There was always a story behind alchemists as young as he was, and it was rarely as pleasant as ‘pissed at the parents, ran off to be an alchemist.’ She was hesitant to touch him, but almost couldn’t stop herself, wiping his bangs free from where they were stuck to his face with tears. “Shh,” she soothed gently, and slowly, slowly, his tremors ceased.

She lifted her hand finally from his face and tucked it under her pillow. Edward sighed deeply in his sleep, but didn’t stir again.

Catie didn’t sleep a wink for the rest of the night.
