Summary: "I wasn't worried."

As the Impala cleared the crest of the driveway and pulled up toward the garage, Kenshin sat back with a relieved sigh. Edward, who was sitting beside him in the back seat of the muscle car, rolled his eyes, elbow on the sill and chin in his hand. "You *really* thought that Sam wouldn't have mentioned the house going up in flames or something?"

"I wasn't worried," Kenshin said nonchalantly.

"Liar," Edward muttered, mostly under his breath.

Sam Winchester, who was driving, glanced in the rear-view mirror at the pair. "You two all right back there?"

"We're fine," Kenshin said. "Edward's just tired."

"Gee thanks, mom."

Kenshin and Edward exchanged sharp looks, and then Edward huffed and looked out the window again. Sam let out an amused noise as he shifted the car into park. "You know, Dean doesn't like flying either," he mentioned. "Won't even set foot in an airplane if he can get away with it."

"I wondered why it was you who came to pick us up," Kenshin said. "I expected it to be Dean when I saw the Impala."

Sam laughed at that as he got out of the car. He'd parked the Impala before the closed garage door - for all the modern conveniences of the Kansaki Sou, automatic garage door openers was not among them. Kenshin and Edward shuffled out of the car as well while it was parked, Sam hefted the garage door up above his head, the wheels rattling in the tracks as he did so.

It was mid-afternoon, the winter giving the day a tinge of gray as the skies hung overcast. Kenshin shivered a little outside of the warm interior of the car, they'd been on the road nearly an hour and it was enough time to forget the bite of the winter temperatures. Edward hissed out his own breath in annoyance, breath visible in the crisp December air.

They didn't have much by way of luggage; Kenshin traveled very light and Edward had learned much the same. At first he had carried a lot more with him but he learned fairly quickly that with no tireless suit of armor to lug his shit around he'd have to do it himself. Edward slung his duffel bag over his head, then stopped and stared up at the house in surprise. "Uh," he said, nodding toward the front of the Kansaki Sou. "The dragon's back."

"He never left," Kenshin reminded Edward, as Sam started the car again to pull it into the garage. "Thanks for the ride, Sam!"

"Don't mention it," Sam called, parking the car.

"Well, he wasn't around for a while," Edward argued, hands tucked into his winter coat's pockets. "Both he and that kid."

"Hiccup."

"Yeah," Edward muttered. "Him."

The dragon, as Edward had put it, was indeed back. The Night Fury named Toothless was seated on the front lawn, tail curled in around his haunch to keep warm and wings shuttered over his body. He was not wearing the saddle that Hiccup had crafted to ride him with, nor the false tail fin that allowed him to soar through the skies like nature intended him to.

He was, though, wearing a specially crafted set of antlers that sat just on the outside of his large ears that had tiny little bells attached to them. The bells jingled every time the dragon moved and cocked his head, which was frequently. He was laying curled inward, watching over Hiccup's shoulder as the viking peered at cards that were arrayed in his hand. Sitting across from him was Sariel, breath fogging in the cold winter air.

Toothless's head shot up at their approach and he growled at Edward, who screwed his nose up and glared at the dragon. For some reason, Toothless adored Sariel and despised Edward, although Kenshin had no idea why. The two were nearly identical, although now if you stood them next to each other you could clearly tell that Edward was the older of the pair.

"Yeah, yeah," Edward said. "Giant lizard."

"Hey," Hiccup said, raising his hand in greeting. "How was that, uh, place you went to, with the things that I can't remember what they're called?"

Sariel shifted slightly, shuffled the cards in his hand and glared at them as if that would make them change.

"Japan was nice," Kenshin said. "Oddly warm, given the time of the year." Kenshin had gone to visit Myojin Akino; the descendant of a friend of his from his former life. Edward had insisted that he be allowed to come along, which Kenshin had no problems with. He made the journey to the land of his birth several times a year and Edward tagging along was old hat - and at this point Edward had in fact learned enough Japanese to just be considered dangerous. He could still read the language better than speak it, but at least he didn't look completely lost when people spoke at him.

"You aren't playing poker," Edward said, peering over Sariel's shoulder. "I don't even recognize those suites-" The cards in Sariel's hand flickered momentarily, and Edward blinked in surprise.

"That's because we're NOT playing poker," Sariel said. "This is sabacc."

"Where on EARTH did you two get a sabacc deck?" Kenshin asked.

Sariel looked up at Kenshin and grinned like a shark. "Do you REALLY want me to answer that question?"

"No," Kenshin said with a sigh. "I very probably don't want you to answer that question."

"Good." Sariel glanced back over at Hiccup and Toothless shook his head violently, antlers jingling merrily. "Your draw," he informed Hiccup, who was showing his cards to Toothless. The dragon made a purring noise, and Hiccup frowned.

Edward shifted his duffel bag on his back. "It's fucking cold out here," he said. "I'm going inside."

"Roy's cooking something," Sariel said. "Dinner, I think."

"You THINK?"

"Well, it didn't smell like anything yet, so I don't know," Sariel shrugged. "I left him to his own devices, you know how he prefers that I not be underfoot while he's cooking."

"Yeah," Kenshin said with a laugh. "I know the feeling well." He looked after Edward, who was already banging through the front door loudly. "Were things all right, while we were gone?"

Sariel shrugged his shoulders. "'Bout the same as ever around here. You know how it is."

"True. Good seeing you, Hiccup." Kenshin shifted his own duffel bag around slightly and headed inside. It would do good to have a hot shower and unpack and laze the rest of the day, travel really wore him out. At least they didn't have to put up with commercial airlines any longer - one of Yuukito's latest jobs had netted him his own airplane.

Kennichi tore around the corner, in human form for once, and actually dressed fairly nice for him. He was barefoot, and a tie hung undone around his neck. "Niisan!" Kennichi said in surprise, skidding to a stop in the foyer. "You're back!"

"Yes," Kenshin said, amused, as he hung his jacket. "I am."

"Oh, well," Kennichi scrubbed his hands through his mussed red hair, the ends of which were a fading shade of purple. He looked guiltily at him. "Do you know how to tie a tie?"

"Hot date tonight?" Kenshin asked, holding his descendant still so he could tie the tie's knot deftly.

"Something like that," Kennichi said. Kenshin straightened the knot and looked appraisingly at him.

"Well, you don't look like something the dragon dragged in," Kenshin said, patting his descendant on the shoulder. Kennichi gave Kenshin a thumbs off and trotted off, hopefully in search of his shoes.

The 'Sou was humming with activity. Roy was indeed in the kitchen, pots surrounding him and the smell of spice and meat in the air. Nick and Rian were sitting in the dining room, books spread all around them as they argued. Takeo was sprawled out on a couch in the living room, a hand held video-game in his hands, and Edward - the other one, not his, the older version, was carrying a box down the stairs. Kenshin acknowledged him as they did a bit of a shuffle-dance to maneuver around each other on the tight staircase, and then his room.

Someone had thoughtfully opened the vents because it wasn't chilly inside the bedroom. Edward's duffel was already thrown on the bed, still closed, but he was nowhere in sight. Kenshin picked up Edward's duffel and dropped it on the floor, next to his own, before falling backwards onto the bed and closing his eyes in relief. It was good to be home.
